Accountability Post: Gym Goal

Back on May 7th, I posted that I was trying to go to the gym regularly again. That day was my fourth time going, and I was celebrating having made it an entire week with the new goal of going three times a week. Well, it’s a month and a half later, and I thought it would be good to pop in and report how I’m doing.

Great!

I actually have continued to go three times a week, always during my lunch break. While I’ve missed a time or two here and there due to scheduling conflicts, I’ve never gone less than twice in a week, and things feel very consistent to me now. (Wednesday I had an all day training with an hour break for lunch. I hurried back to my office, changed, went to the gym, came back, changed, and went back in time to finish the training. I was happy I stuck to my goal even when I might have used the excuse to get out of it.)

It helps that my gym sessions are short. A half hour, and that includes the time it takes to walk over to the fitness center and back. I don’t do a ton of things, but I do enough to feel like I did, indeed, work out some that day. It also helps that now that I’ve been going regularly for a few weeks, I feel more and more like it’s a place I belong. Now like it’s my natural habitat or anything like that, but I don’t feel like a complete pretender for going. (Just a quasi-pretender.)

But probably the thing that increases the odds the most that I’ll keep going is the fact that I feel better after I’ve gone. My back hasn’t been hurting, and I feel like I have more energy. I’m back on the diet faithfully for the moment, and I’m trying to increase my health across the board. This feels like a significant part of that. I’ve seen progress in the amount of weight I’m working with, and that’s another motivator. Are these weights something to write home about? Nope. But I’m not going so that I become the world’s strongest person. I’m going to become a stronger me, and for that, I only have to compete with myself.

Anyway. So far, so good. Here’s hoping the habit sticks.
