Frequently Asked Questions about Time Travel

FAQ about Time Travel is a movie that flew under the radar for me completely. I’d never even heard of it until I stumbled across mention of it online. With a title like that, how could I not be intrigued? (Right up front, a warning: it’s not available to stream at the moment, so you’ll have to either order it on Netflix DVD, or keep an eye out for it when it is. Just didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up too much, only to dash them with this info at the end.)

The premise is simple: three Brits hanging out at a pub. One a sci-fi geek, one a film geek, one a generic bloke. And then a time traveler from the future comes to meet with the sci-fi geek, in a Bill and Ted twist. He’s going to become famous, see? Seems like a reasonable enough set up.

Then they encounter the time leak in the bathroom.

What ensues is a very smartly executed film that knows the tropes it’s riffing on and isn’t afraid to poke fun at them. The three guys start crisscrossing throughout time, and get in a whole lot of trouble and adventure as they do it. Fun and free-spirited, it was a great find and perfect after a long day of blarg.

It helps that it’s got a lead character acted by Chris O’Dowd of IT Crowd fame. His accent alone is often enough to make me smile, and he plays the head-in-the-clouds geek of a man child perfectly. In many ways, this movie felt like it was intended for the Shaun of the Dead crew, but it still does wonderfully on its own.

It’s not high budget, but it does the best it can with what it’s got. As another warning, just be aware that although the movie is TV-14 in the UK, it’s got much more than a single f-bomb, which was very surprising and unexpected. The whims of ratings systems.

In any case, I highly recommend the movie. Anyone else out there already seen it? It’s an easy 8/10 for me.
