Off to School

Kindergarten CopTRC went off to school this morning. Time for first grade. I’ll admit that today didn’t seem nearly as momentous as last year (was it really already a year ago!?!), but I was still pretty proud of him. Last year I remember him being so excited to get on the school bus for the first time. He was bouncing up and down. This time, it was all old hat to him. Last year, he couldn’t read. This year, he read over 200 books this past summer. So crazy to see how fast he’s growing up.

I’m really happy that he still likes to do things with me. Before school this morning, he sat down with me and said, “You know Dad, I think we should should plan out what we’re going to do every afternoon together, so that we don’t waste time trying to figure out what we’re going to do.” A few days before that, he and I were working on a Rubik’s Cube together, and he looked at my hand. “Dad, your hand is shaking.”

I glanced at it. “It is?” Maybe a smidge, I suppose.

“Yeah,” he said. Then, quieter, “I think you’re getting old.”

Maybe there are some latent separation anxiety issues going on here. In any case, I’m hopeful that when I go home today to wait for him to come back, that his report will be full of happiness and excitement. New teacher, new friends, new subjects–who knows?
