Yesterday we had some real highs and lows, as a nation. The highlight for me was definitely the opportunity to watch us launch another moon mission. The amount of science, teamwork, and effort involved in making something like that happen is incredible, and I found it very inspiring. I’ve long loved pretty much anything Space Race-related, so to see us finally returning to the moon is something I’m very much in favor of. It’s an effort that has spanned administrations.
I had to watch it on delay, unfortunately, as I was busy right during the launch itself. Of course, this meant that as soon as I was done watching the launch, when I stopped it, I was plopped right into the middle of Trump’s address to the nation. He spoke to his reasons for starting the “military action” in Iran, and outlined his plan to bomb them “back to the Stone Ages where they belong.” Earlier in the day, I listened to the arguments in the Supreme Court as the administration seeks to end birthright citizenship.
That sums up America for me right now. There are still things we’re doing that we can be proud of, but at the same time, there are things going on that are nothing but disappointing. The actions this administration is taking have thrown so much of the world and the country into turmoil. And while that turmoil is raging, there’s a core pocket of Trump supporters unwilling or unable to see it for what it is.
I don’t have much to add to the discussion today. No thoughts that are going to magically change anyone’s mind. It was just the stark contrast of going from one extreme to the other that stood out to me. I hope we can continue to push for more of the first and less of the second.
