UMF has a Fall Break over Indigenous Peoples Weekend, and we took the opportunity to take the girls out to Eastport for a beach house vacation. We typically try to get to the beach a day or two each year, but we never made it this time, and this seemed like . . . better than nothing?
Eastport is about as far east as you can go and still be in Maine. (Technically the easternmost spot of Maine is Quoddy Head, which is just to the south of Eastport, but who’s counting?) It was three and a half hours to get there, but the foliage was gorgeous, and the drive was very pleasant. We got a VRBO right on a rocky beach, with no neighbors in sight. For most part, we just hung around the house and walked on the beach, looking for sea glass and relaxing. (I’m not a sea glass expert, but it felt like we found a whole bunch, in a variety of colors. It was by far Michaela’s favorite thing to do. She was going out during any spare time we had, just walking around and exploring.)
Eastport proper was about 3 miles away. It’s a tiny town of about 1,000 people that’s primarily tourism-based. I imagine during the summer it’s much more hopping than when we were there. We walked around downtown, poking our heads into a few stores, and had lunch at the WaCo Diner, which bills itself as the oldest diner in Maine.
Other than that, we played board games, watched a movie, had a cookout, flew a kite, read, watched the BYU/Arizona game (we won!), and (sadly) got some work done. Nothing extravagant, but it was very nice to get away for a bit and do something different. Staycations are good to, but there’s something to be said for a change of scenery.
Of course, it’s back to work now. The students and faculty still have the day off, but no such luck for the staff . . .
