Pleased to Announce

I finally was able to put up the beta version of the library website I’ve been working on for a year. My plan is to test it out this semester and then have the final version live for the new year. If any of you want to check it out and make any suggestions, feel free to drop me a line. Things that Pain Me

Yeah. I’m having a hurting day. For starters, I’ve got this canker in my mouth that’s making it painful to even talk. I know that might be Too Much Information, but it’s totally bumming me out. Then to make matters worse, I’ve had a sinus headache for the past couple of days, and it’s getting worse. No fun. So I’m feeling all around kind of achy today. Other things that irritate me, but don’t necessarily pain me: People trying to con libraries: I don’t know if you know, but most public libraries will allow patrons (that’s you) to make suggestions

Google Grouse

Can I just take a moment to complain about something librarian-ish? I just read this article, a scientific study conducted on Google searches. Here’s the abstract: An eye tracking experiment revealed that college student users have substantial trust in Google’s ability to rank results by their true relevance to the query. When the participants selected a link to follow from Google’s result pages, their decisions were strongly biased towards links higher in position even if the abstracts themselves were less relevant. While the participants reacted to artificially reduced retrieval quality by greater scrutiny, they failed to achieve the same success
