My Thoughts on the Oscar Nominations

First of all, how cool is that hat? I want one. Maybe I should buy one and use it as the yearly trophy for my Oscar competition. Tempting . . . Anyway–the Oscars. That yearly self-congratulatory time for cinema. It’s as if I said I’d start having a ceremony once a year where I gave awards to myself for the coolest things I did all year. Sure, the first few years would seem rather strange, but after I’d been at it for thirty or forty years, it would turn into a Venerable Institution. I might even be able to sell […]

Oscars

So the Oscars were last night, and thanks to the kindness of some friends, I was able to watch the whole thing live. (There are times I miss my satellite. But still not $600 worth of missing it. However, maybe my friends are beginning to get tired of me freeloading TV all the time . . .) What did I think? Well, I thought it was too long, for one thing. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were . . . okay. Not stunning, not hilarious, just sort of there. The opening with Neil Patrick Harris was moronic. The spiel with

Snow, Blessed Snow

You know what’s way better than any holiday you can have? An unexpected one. We got 24 inches of the white stuff last night, but it ended around 4am, and I was worried that they wouldn’t cancel classes at the university–they seem to have been a bit stingier about that this year than they have in the past. So I was really gunning for a two hour delay–something long enough to let me dig myself out. Instead, when I phoned the switchboard at 5:35, I heard that classes were canceled! Sure, I had to spend an hour and a half

Oscars and Underdog

As some of you are no doubt aware, today the Oscar nominations were announced. Benjamin Button racked up 13 noms, Slumdog Millionaire got 10 and Dark Knight got 8 (though the only biggie was Ledger for supporting actor). I have to admit that I’m not entirely thrilled with the field this year. Too many repeat nominations for movies I’m just not that hyped about. I’ll see them all at some point, no doubt–but when you see the same movies nominated in all the categories . . . it gets kind of boring. Sigh. Watched Underdog last night with TRC. He

Joy

Anybody who’s anybody watches the Oscars. That’s right. If you didn’t watch them last night, then you are officially nobody. How does that make you feel? This year I was particularly happy, because the directors who I think are the best thing since word processing were awarded with three Oscars. That’s right. The Coen Brothers did super good. I have yet to see No Country for Old Men–I’m probably going to have to wait for DVD, since I don’t get to go to the theaters as much as I’d like. But to me, it doesn’t matter. I’m just glad they
