Media Diet for 1.27.25

Another week, another report for what I’ve been up to.

Movies:

–Tangled–Still a very solid more modern take on a Disney princess story.

–Inside Out 2–I’m trying to watch Oscar nominated movies, and this was a gimme. So, on the one hand, this was another fascinating look at how emotions can influence the course of our lives. Plenty of good humor and thought provoking things. On the other, I have a personal hang up with anxiety and anything anxiety-related, so that automatically makes me uncomfortable watching something that focuses on it. (It really got in the way of me enjoying season 2 of Ted Lasso, as well.)

–Conclave: It’s not often you have a movie rated PG get nominated for Best Picture these days. Not that this is a movie kids would turn out in droves for, but it’s refreshing to have a very well-told story that doesn’t resort to tricks to make it feel more “mature.” Is it an accurate look on how the next Pope is chosen each time? I’m going to go out on a limb and say, “No.” Is it a great story that uses that as a premise for all sorts of delicious intrigue? Definitely yes. Available on Peacock and very much worth your time.

Television:

–Silo Season 2: Not finished with the season yet, but still really loving this adaptation on AppleTV+. Two episodes to go.

Books:

–Oathbringer: Still a big fan of the Stormlight Archive series, even if the books are super long. (Maybe because the books are super long? If I didn’t have this goal of reading a book a week, I think that would be less of an issue. Then again, I’m also really liking reading them quickly, and forcing myself to prioritize reading a bit more.)

–Dawnshard: Thank goodness for the “novelettes” in the SA series. Great reads, and they’re actually short. 🙂

–Rhythm of War: I’m currently 26% of the way into this one. Excited that I’m getting closer to reading the actual new book in the series.

Board Games

Quacks of Quedlinburg: We got this one for Christmas, and it’s a great game. Tops out at 4 players, but it’s based on a great lottery mechanic that has a strong press-your-luck element.

Hegemony: One game took me over four hours to play. That’s . . . a lot of game. I enjoyed it, but I feel like I’d need to know the game better to really get the most out of it, and I’m not sure if I’ve got the time to do that.

Harmonies: This one, on the other hand, is way more accessible. Beautiful pieces, simple to understand, and lots of layers to it. Highly recommended.

Video Games

–Minecraft: An oldie, but a goodie. Tomas has set up a Realm, and I’ve played in it a bit with MC. Not a ton, because not much time, but always fun.

–Diablo IV: Season 7 just started, so I began a new Rogue. Not much time to actually play it, though.
