I saw Disney+ had just put up a live recording of the West End production of Frozen, and I’m a huge sucker for live recordings of stage productions, so we watched it right away as a family. I wasn’t sure of what we would get. It wasn’t exactly up front that it was the actual West End production, so I was initially concerned this might just be something that was done at the theme parks. (I couldn’t remember if Disney had actually done an official Broadway adaptation of Frozen.) But it definitely was the real deal.
I’ll admit things seemed dicey for the first bit. The two young girls they had as Elsa and Anna were a little over the top for me, and I couldn’t tell which direction things were heading. There were also 2 butt jokes in the first five minutes. That’s a concerning number for a production I’m not sure I’m supposed to take seriously or not . . .
Thankfully, things got incredibly better from there, and we all really enjoyed ourselves. The musical numbers were great, the special effects were amazing, the choreography was lively and fun. Really almost nothing to complain about. A number of new songs had been composed for the stage, and I enjoyed them all (especially the Hygge number).
After it was over, I looked into things and discovered Disney started Frozen on Broadway in 2018, but COVID put an end to it. Thankfully, they started it back up in the West End from 2021-2024, and that’s what they recorded for this. Honestly, I would watch pretty much any live recording of a stage production. They’ve recorded thousands of Broadway productions, but they aren’t available for public release. Maybe one day? If they can get through the jungle of contracts they’d have to get through.
Until then, I’m just happy to be able to see what I can. You should definitely check this one out. 9/10
