Super Bowl 2025

Yeah, I know it was Super Bowl LIX, but it gets really hard to tell the different games apart, and the Roman numerals don’t help me much with that.

No matter what you call it, the game itself this year was underwhelming at best, and this is coming from an Eagles fan. I mean, I’m glad my team won, and it felt good to just dismantle the Chiefs to that extent, but at the same time, it just wasn’t a very entertaining experience. Even the ads were just kind of . . . meh. You had the requisite “serious commercials with a famous actor saying something inspiring before revealing they’re actually selling something” ones, and then a number of ones that were just kind of disgusting. (Did we really need a flying mustache AND flying eyebrows ad in the same night? And don’t get me started on that awful flesh hat ad I had to endure twice.)

The halftime show seemed solid to me, though admittedly I had a hard time telling any of the songs apart. (Do they call rap tracks “songs”?) Daniela liked it a lot, so there’s that. She’s my official new judge for “Is this pop culture thing I don’t understand actually any good?” I spent about a half hour trying to figure out exactly what was up between Lamar and Drake before I realized that I don’t actually care.

As usual, I was on the lookout for any monkeys in the commercials. We had a total of 1.3 last night. One was just a glimpse, and then the appearance of Puppy Monkey Baby, of course, just counts for a third of a monkey.

Overall, I kept thinking to myself how interesting it was that the Super Bowl takes itself as seriously as it does. Like, it feels like people view it as this epitome of American civilization, and I’m just not sure that’s the yearly event I’d choose to be our flag bearer. (Though then again, maybe it does make a lot of sense, as it says something about who we are at the moment . . .)

In any case, I watched football and I ate too much food, so in a way, it’s kind of Thanksgiving: The Revenge. It was fun to gather with friends, and I continue to be a football fan. And go Eagles.
