I started watching The Expanse a few years ago. I’d heard good things about it, and I enjoyed the first season a fair bit. However, midway through the second season, I started to get frustrated. The characters seemed to be making some foolish decisions just for the same of plot development, and it got to the point that I eventually gave up on it altogether.
Between then and now, I had multiple people tell me that I gave up on the show too soon, and that it really was solid from start to finish. Well, I can dismiss one or two people disagreeing with me, but enough friends suggested I give the show another try that I finally broke down and did just that. I didn’t remember much of it from my first viewing, so Denisa and I started fresh, watching it with Tomas.
It still had a bit of a slump in the second season, but I pushed through, and I’m very glad that I did. We just finished the sixth and final season last night, and it was a lot of fun. Often the biggest test of how much I like just about anything is if I’m willing to stay up late to watch or read more of it. While it’s not great for my sleep schedule. the fact that I want to watch something enough to lose sleep over it speaks volumes.
I found myself wanting to watch two episodes (or even three) of the Expanse a night by the end, even while we’ve been super busy.
If you don’t know anything about it at all, it’s a science fiction series based on the series of books by James S. A. Corey, detailing mankind’s first contact with a very alien life form. It’s also fairly hard sci-fi, meaning it does its best to stick to the laws of physics and portray things as accurately as possible. (No lightsabers. No “gravity magically is the same everywhere.”)
I now would glad recommend it to any sci-fi fan, and even to sci-fi adjacent fans. 🙂 Just be aware that there are some spots where it gets a bit bogged down, and that the final season was truncated due to budget constraints. Other than that? Happy watching.
