Adventures at My First Magic Prerelease Event

Last Saturday was the prerelease for the latest Magic the Gathering set: Avacyn Restored. I’ve been playing Magic online against my good accordion playing bud down in Philly, and thoroughly enjoy it. But I haven’t played competitively, or against strangers. For those of you who don’t know, at a prerelease, you go and play in a tournament for prizes, essentially. I’m quite the introvert until I get to know someone, so the idea of going to play against strangers . . . didn’t really fill me with glee. New environment? Nobody I know there? Not my comfort zone. But my […]

Board Game Review: Lord of the Rings Living Card Game

I don’t review board games very often (mainly because . . . I just haven’t), but I’ve been playing one over the last few weeks that I just had to talk about. First, a bit of background. I love board games. Not things like Monopoly and Life–although I started with those. No, I’m more into complicated things that have lots of little pieces to keep track of. Settlers of Catan is great, but I’ve gone on since then. I like big rule books, complicated strategies. I like games that make me think, and think a lot. The only problem is

Board Game Review: Dominion

DKC and I had a chance to play one of the board games I got for my birthday a few weeks ago: Dominion. It’s not the easiest game for me to describe, actually. Check out the link for a fairly good overview. It’s card-based. You start each game with some combination of cards that let you do a specific type of ability. You use those cards to build a deck and use that deck to beat your opponent. DKC isn’t the world’s most adventurous board gamer (okay–technically this game doesn’t have a board, but hey–who’s counting?), and she was a

War of the Ring

Saturday evening I played one of the coolest board games I’ve ever had the chance to play: War of the Ring.  Basically, it’s a game that begins when the Fellowship of the Ring is in Rivendell.  One side controls the good guys and one side controls the bad guys, and then you play to see which side wins.  Politics, destroying the ring, being corrupted by the ring–it’s all in there.  Massive battles led by Aragorn or Gandalf?  Check.  Nazgul flying all over the place?  Check.  It was just so darn cool.  Of course, it took two hours to figure out

A Three Hour Tour

So I went to play a game with friends today: Twilight Imperium.  And it was pretty darn cool.  Who was there, you ask?  It was held in honor of Fellfrosch’s birthday, and Spriggan, Skar, Love Basket, Fell, Matt and Alan all came.  Why Matt and Alan don’t have nearly as cool nicknames as the rest is beyond me, but there you have it.  House of Mustard was going to come, but he sicked out on us.  We got together at 9 in the morning, started playing at 10:30, and then finished at 6:30.  That’s right: 8 hours of non-stop gaming.
