Broadway Bound: A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder

It’s been three years since I last went in to see a musical on Broadway. Far too long. And so when the fam’s going down to Pennsylvania this Thanksgiving, I wanted to take the chance to head into New York. I debated taking the kids with Denisa and me, but in the end decided not to–we’ll be going to see Mythbusters Live in Philadelphia with them, instead. So it’s just going to be Denisa and me. First question up was what to see. I went and glanced over the offerings online, but there were just so many to choose from. […]

Movie Review: Popeye

Even before Robin Williams’ death, I had put Popeye into my Netflix queue. I’d seen it once before (a long time ago), and I wanted to know if my memories of it were accurate. From what I recalled, it was a bizarre musical, but it was directed by Robert Altman, so I wanted to give it another shot. What did I think? It’s a bizarre musical, pretty much exactly as I remembered it. There are some good things to it. The set design was great, and I appreciated the way they tried to make the whole thing feel very cartoony

Shrek: The Musical

Shrek: The Musical popped up in my Netflix suggestions a while ago, and for the first while, I resisted. Nothing about the movie–as much as I enjoyed it–led me to believe it really needed to be a musical, and I envisioned 2.5 hours of fart jokes set to a musical score. Not exactly my idea of a fun time. And yet, one thing I’ve been wanting my kids to get into more is the Broadway scene. Especially TRC. The motivation is purely selfish. I like watching musicals, and I’d love to watch them with my family, but he’s typically the

Writing Lessons Learned from Frozen

I finally joined the rest of the world and watched Frozen yesterday. We’d meant to catch it in the theaters, but it never happened, so it had to wait until we could buy it on Bluray. What did I think? It was a cute movie and a lot of fun to watch. I really enjoyed the musical numbers and was encouraged that Disney might have found another great songwriting team to turn to for their music. The characters were funny and light, the animation was gorgeous, and it was an adventurous romp with enough humor to keep things clipping at

A Review of The Sound of Music LIVE! (or undead, as the case may be . . .)

When I saw Carrie Underwood was going to be headlining a live production of The Sound of Music, I was immediately intrigued. I liked Carrie back from the days when I watched American Idol, and the idea of another live musical production was interesting. How would they stage it? How long would it be? I decided to tune in–even put it on my calendar so I didn’t miss it. Last night was the night, and . . .  It was kind of a wreck. There were small pools of good in it, but some of the decisions they made just
