Oscar Round Up

And so we reach another end of another Oscars broadcast. This one was fairly enjoyable, as far as Oscars broadcasts go. It did feel odd to me that the situation in Ukraine was really only brought up a couple of times (and one of those times was when an actor said, “To the people watching in Ukraine.” Um . . . dude? Ukraine’s got much more serious stuff to deal with at the moment than the Oscars.), but overall I had a fun time. Ellen was her usually reliable self. Some people might have thought the pizza schtick and other […]

Oscar Reactions

Another Oscar night has come and gone. This one was quite the snowy one up here in Maine, but the fam still had a great time, and the party was plenty swanky. TRC stayed up the whole night, which I suppose means the show must have been at least somewhat interesting, although he assured me he was much more interested in the commercials. Apparently those zombie unicorn commercials were aimed squarely at the 8 year old audience, which must mean Samsung is playing the *really* long game, abandoning hope of winning over today’s buyers in hopes of stealing the next

Oscars 2012 Summary

Another hard fought Oscar Tournament last night at my yearly Oscar Gala. (Can you call something a gala if only 11 people are there? Yes. Yes you can.) For those of you who don’t know, I’m a tad competitive. If there was a way to turn breathing into some sort of a contest, I would do it. I love the Oscars, and I watch it fairly religiously. So it’s natural that I require all guests at my Oscars party to fill out a ballot–boldly declaring their choices in ink. For me, it’s a lot like the NCAA basketball tournament. Do

Technical Difficulties and the Oscars

Let’s get one thing perfectly clear before I go on this short diatribe: I love living in Maine. I love how few people there are here, and how most of the ones who are here are friendly and open and willing to help a stranger or say hi to you on the street. Maine is great, and it would take an awful lot to make me want to move. However, just as “with great power comes great responsibility,” with few people comes some crappy technology. My internet speed tops out at 3 mbps as far as a reliable speed goes. That

As Promised, A Picture of Me Wearing the Oscar the Grouch Hat

Don’t anybody say I don’t follow through with my promises, even when they involve public humiliation. So you might recall from my post on the upcoming Oscars that I’d made a request from you, my faithful readers. I wanted the Oscar the Grouch hat you see at the top of this post, to use as the yearly trophy for my Oscar party. (Not content to just do March Madness pools, I do Oscar pools, too. Hey–I like to swim.) I promised that if someone bought it for me, then I’d take a picture and post it here. I had made the
