Television Review: Squid Game: The Challenge

On paper, this seems like a terrible idea. “You know that game show where rich people watch poor people get killed? What if we did that for real?” Squid Game is great because of how horrific it is. How in the world would that even work? Simple. Just make the people pretend to die, instead of actually die. Keep everything else (almost), but make it so people don’t have to get shot for the game to continue. Would it still be as tense and riveting? The short answer is yes. For one thing, they put $4.56 million on the line.

Video Game Review: Baldur’s Gate 3

Sometimes I debate whether or not I should review video games. In the first place, I almost always only buy games that are very big. They’re bound to be bestsellers, and most people who are into gaming will have no doubt already heard all about those games. Secondly, by the time I’ve played enough of a game to really feel like I can give it a review, it’s months after it’s been released, and everyone who really wanted to get it, probably already got it. So what’s the point? Well, the point is the same as any of my other

Television Review: Picard Season Three

So I discovered the best way to handle season two of Picard. Just don’t watch it. Not even a single episode. There’s nothing in the third season that connects to the second in any way. In fact, it seems like they purposefully ignore some of the most important elements of the second season, so even the writers just kind of waved the white flag and said they were sorry. Was season three any better? Yes-ish. It was about as blatant fan service as you can get, but if you’re watching a show called “Picard,” something tells me you kind of

Television Review: Wheel of Time Season 2

The first season of the Wheel of Time on Amazon was a mixed bag. There were some aspects of it that I really loved. Seeing so many of these characters brought to life at last was really satisfying, and there were some parts that were fantastic. I loved the first episode, for example, with the Trolloc attack on Two Rivers. Other aspects were bewildering, like an entire episode devoted to Lan being sad, and random sexiness thrown in for seemingly no reason. (Did we need Lan and Moiraine in a hot tub? Who came up with that idea?) And then

Television Review: Picard Season 1

I’m a fan of Star Trek, though I’m also far from a Trekkie. I’ve seen most of the movies, and a lot of the television shows, though not nearly all of them. Denisa and I watched some of The Next Generation together a while ago, and it was fun, but also not riveting enough for us to stick with it. The “Problem of the Week” style of television that used to be dominant just doesn’t quite do it for me. But I’d heard good things about Picard, so we decided to give it a shot. We finished the first season
