Parent Teacher Conference

Yesterday DKC and I had our very first parent teacher conference. I’m happy to report it went glowingly. TRC is leaps and bounds ahead of the other students, apparently–he already has mastered everything Kindergarten has to offer him. I’m really happy with his teacher’s approach to him–she’s giving him more challenging work, pushing him to the same extent that she’s pushing the other students. For example, the rest of the class is working on counting. TRC can already count to however high he wants to. (He told me a few months ago that he could count to 440. He was […]

Two Definitions

Definition of a good feeling: when you go to your Kindergartener’s school’s open house, and you talk to his teacher to see how he’s doing, and she has nothing but glowing things to say about him. Now granted, I expect she tries to have nothing but glowing things to say about all her students, but still . . . I think I’m allowed a bit of fatherly pride. Definition of a bad feeling: when you get an installation cost estimate for that wood stove you’re planning on getting, and the installation costs as much as the wood stove. And the

TRC Goes to School

The big day has come and gone. TRC is now officially a Kindergartener. I’m proud and happy (and relieved) to say that he had a fantastic time. DKC and I waited with him for the bus this morning, along with DC. He was practically bouncing off everything in sight, he was so excited. The bus finally came, and then I think it hit him that this was the Real Deal. He hesitated a bit before he got on the bus, but on he went, and that was that. DC saw him go on the bus and drive away, and she

On the School Bus

Last night was TRC’s Kindergarten open house, a chance for parents to bring their new Kindergarteners to the school and let them check out their class, meet their teachers, look at the school–the whole shebang. TRC was extremely excited. The highlight of the evening for him was getting to go on a REAL SCHOOL BUS. He just couldn’t believe he was finally able to do something quite that awesome. It was fun watching him run up and down the aisle, pick different seats, talk to his friends about how excited they are.* Of course, being back on a school bus

Graduation and Separation

TRC graduated from preschool today. He was very excited (they performed a play–he was a frog. Again.), but he was also really sad. Sad because it had come to an end and “he’d never get to go to preschool again.” I tried to comfort him: reassure him that he’d still see his friends, and that Kindergarten would be fun, too. At the same time, though, I couldn’t help but think that this is something he has to learn to deal with. I’ve never been a good one for good byes. I like to keep them short, because they make me
