Lessons Learned from My Blog: Consistency Beats Pizzazz

I was taking a minute to look over my blog statistics for the last while. (Surprised to see that my post about Denisa’s illicit House Elf use rocketed right up to the top tiers of my page views. Probably has something to do with the way I linked it on Facebook, making it seem like something bad was happening. People flock to bad news. Everybody loves a train wreck.) It’s gratifying to see how many people read my blog. Still hardly up in the stratosphere, but after doing this for seven years (today is my 1,819th post!), I definitely don’t […]

Mormons Asked to Flood Social Media? Ruh-Roh . . .

I love my church. I really do, and I think that’s pretty well documented as I’ve blogged over the years. But there are times when I do a mental cringe about some of the things Mormons do or say or are asked to do or say. Today’s cringe-inducing bit? This article in the Deseret News, where Elder Bednar challenged Mormons to flood the earth with gospel messages. Here’s a relevant quote: Beginning at this place on this day, I exhort you to sweep the earth with messages filled with righteousness and truth — messages that are authentic, edifying, and praiseworthy

Anticipating Interest: Writing Great Blog Posts

(HUGE bonus points if you get the connection of that picture to today’s post.) So I’m happy to be able to report that yesterday’s rant against the anti-social network crowd has taken the title of “Most Viewed Post in a Single Day” on my blog. It beat the former record holder (a post I wrote about getting along in politics the day after the Romney/Obama election) by about 50%–so it wasn’t even close. I’m always pleased when one of my posts strikes a chord with readers. It’s a great feeling when strangers start sharing it and using my words to

The Top Ten Most Popular Posts of Mine from 2013

Here we are, the end of another year. And what better way to celebrate than to take a walk down memory lane and see what were the posts that interested the most people over the past year? Since that’s something I was going to check out anyway, I figured it’d make a nice blog post. Two birds, one stone–that sort of thing. Ready? Starting the list off at number ten was my response to the use of the word “Gypsy” in Pacific Rim. I admit in hindsight that the post came across as much harsher than I intended it to

Why I Don’t Send Out Christmas Cards

It’s Christmastime, which means that it’s time to be sending out a slew of Christmas cards to all my friends and relations and . . . wait. I never do that. I do a family newsletter for a select few individuals, but other than that, I send out pretty much nothing. And each year, a part of me feels guilty. I enjoy getting other people’s cards–perhaps it’s hypocritical of me to not be sending the same in return. And no one likes to feel hypocritical, do they? But I’m not going to send out cards this year, and I very
