Not a Book Snob, After All

I’m pleased to say I just finished a book I thoroughly enjoyed. If you like epic fantasy along the lines of George R.R. Martin (but with less graphic . . . everything) and Stephen Erikson, might I recommend Acacia? Fantastically written, with great characters and an intriguing plot that goes beyond what’s normally encountered in fantasy today, I really got wrapped up in it and had a great time reading it. Check it out from your local library today. And yes, I’m still sick.

Book Snob

Am I becoming a book snob? I have now put down three books in the past week (finished two of them, and the third I just couldn’t get into). In the case of the two I finished, one was a train wreck, and the other was just disappointing at the end. (Note to self: Having the entire plot hinge on having the “good guys” withhold information from the protagonist–and then not having a good reason for the good guys to withhold said information . . . kind of lame. That’s now on my Things to Avoid When I’m Writing List.)

Criticism

So I’m in a bit of a quandary today. You see, I finished reading a book last night, and I was left rather disappointed. It was Middle Grade fantasy, and so much of it came across as contrived and stupid. Characters make dumb decisions, the magic is introduced as it’s necessary to advance the plot, there are several (hopefully unintentional) racist sections . . . So what should I do? Should I tell the world what book this is and encourage them to avoid it, or should I bite my tongue and keep silent. If this book had come up
