No Concept of Time

I’m off to Bangor today for an MLA Board retreat. Or something like that. What does that mean in layman’s terms? It means the head honchos of the Maine Library Association are going to get together and talk turkey for six hours or so. Future of the association, how to stay strong, keep libraries vibrant–big picture planning sort of stuff. I’m actually looking forward to it a fair bit, to be honest. I’m a big believer in libraries, and I like having the chance to try to help them succeed. It also means a four hour round trip to Bangor. […]

Sometimes the Answer’s Staring You in the Face

Yesterday I posted all about how distressed I was that I wasn’t reading more. I just didn’t have the time! Something else was going to have to go! I needed to make drastic life changes to make sure I started upping the number of books I read! I really felt upset about it, and so I blogged those frustrations out. It took all of about two minutes for one of my many wonderful friends to point out the solution: Audiobooks. (Thanks, Nissa! That’s why you’re the president, and I’m the president of vice. Or . . . something.) I’ve had

Budgeting Time is Much Like Budgeting Money

I had an interesting conversation the other day, where I sort of stumbled across an idea that–while it’s probably not original–was original to me. Meaning, I hadn’t thought of it before, or heard it espoused. Basically, it boils down to a riff off the old “time is money” schtick. I don’t pretend to make a lot of money. I’m a librarian as my main job, and a newbie author on the side. Denisa works a lot of various other jobs–tutoring, baking, teaching, grading exams–in addition to keeping the house in order, but still, even combined, we don’t exactly bring in

Is Downtime a Waste of Time?

I’ve come to the (probably not unforeseeable) conclusion that Magic the Gathering is close to the most perfect game in the world for me. Infinitely replayable, always being updated, fantasy-based theme, and you get to organize things. A lot. You don’t get to be a librarian without having a really strong “This Must All Be Put in Order” streak in you somewhere. Yesterday morning, I sat down to reorganize my cards “just for a second.” I looked up at the clock, and two hours had gone by. Also, I hadn’t eaten breakfast. And I was too late to eat lunch.

Decluttering

Ever since Christmas, when I bought DKC a book on how to declutter a home, I’ve been a decluttering fiend. Up until reading that book (yes, I read it first despite the fact that I gave it to my wife. She wasn’t reading it. So I did.) I’d never been able to really get on top of clutter. Stuff just seemed to congregate in various areas of the house on its own accord. I blamed it on SPR (Spontaneous Paper Reproduction). My kitchen was usually a disaster, the area by my bed was heaped with clothes, books, and other detritus
