Book Review: I Shall Wear Midnight

I Shall Wear Midnight by Terry Pratchett My rating: 4 of 5 stars I’ve been making a more concerted effort to read more books–or listen to more, as the case may be. Up today is another audiobook I listened to: the fourth Tiffany Aching book by Terry Pratchett. I’m a big Pratchett fan, and I loved the Wee Free Men–the first one in this series. For those of you who don’t know, it stars a young (16 year-old) witch and a group of stealing, fighting, Scottish Smurfs (more or less). Like most of Pratchett’s work, it mixes humor and philosophy […]

Book Review: Steelheart

Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson My rating: 5 of 5 stars I’m making a renewed effort to read more books lately, and I have to say it’s a goal that’s made much simpler when the books are as quick to read as Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart was for me. Do you ever have a book that you read, and you’re just sick with envy over? Maybe not, I suppose–unless you’re an author yourself. Full disclaimer if you didn’t already know it–Brandon’s a good friend of mine, and there are times when I just want to throttle the guy for the simple reason

Special Article Written by Yours Truly–Diversity in Fantasy

I was invited to write an article on diversity in fantasy for Forever Young Adult. I’m quite pleased with how it turned out. Here’s the first bit. Click on to read the whole thing. Exploring the Unknown: Diverse Settings and Folklore in YA Sometimes it seems that current YA is drowning in a sea of cookie cutter folklore. Vampires and werewolves and zombies, oh my! And when I’ve spoken on panels at conferences about how to come up with ideas for novels, a question I get time and time again boils down to, “How do I make my (vampires/werewolves/zombies) unique?”

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Successful Characterization (or Lack Thereof)

A week or two ago, Denisa and I watched the new Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the Nicholas Cage “remake/revision” of the Mickey Mouse classic. What did I think? Well, I didn’t rush right out and write a review, and that might tell you something. (Although I also saw the Coen Bros. True Grit, and I loved that one–4 stars easy. A perfect Bryce movie.) But in this case, I was a bit conflicted about my review. The thing is, I loved the world of the movie. The special effects were fantastic, and the plot line is one I’m typically quite content with:

Book Review: The Passage

The Passage by Justin Cronin My rating: 3 of 5 stars A vampire book that isn’t your typical vampire book. A more realistic take on the genre, with viruses and genetics and rational explanations and plagues and guns and danger and everything else you can stuff into a thick book. Should be great, right? That’s what I thought, at least. And it certainly was intriguing. The first act of the book was really good–I was reading at a fast clip, and it was getting more and more engrossing. Then act II hits, and I stopped. Not a brick wall sort
