What Will You Be When You Grow Up?

I hated that question when I was a kid. Still do, really. I have a serious fear of commitment about some things. I mean, I can’t even commit to a favorite book or movie sometimes (discounting Groundhog Day, of course)–how was I supposed to decide on such an earth shattering decision as “What are you going to do with the rest of your life?” Yesterday, I was asked on short notice to participate in a career fair. My assignment? Talk to high school kids about the job I do now and how I ended up getting it. I had pretty […]

No Concept of Time

I’m off to Bangor today for an MLA Board retreat. Or something like that. What does that mean in layman’s terms? It means the head honchos of the Maine Library Association are going to get together and talk turkey for six hours or so. Future of the association, how to stay strong, keep libraries vibrant–big picture planning sort of stuff. I’m actually looking forward to it a fair bit, to be honest. I’m a big believer in libraries, and I like having the chance to try to help them succeed. It also means a four hour round trip to Bangor.

Distracted from Reading

I’m a reader. Always have been, always will be. I mean–come on. Librarian? Author? I don’t just read books. I devour them. Except . . . I haven’t been lately. My To Read pile seems to get only larger, and my Have Read pile stays the same. I don’t think I’ve finished a book in at least a month, and just writing that down feels painful to me. I haven’t read a book in a month? What the heck is wrong with me? So if I haven’t been reading books, what in the world *have* I been doing? Lots of other

Goals: Time is Finite. Efficiency is Not.

A friend of mine had an excellent blog post earlier this week about learning to play a new instrument and overcoming obstacles. In it, he mentioned a quote from a music instructor he’d had: “Air is finite. Efficiency is not.” My friend extended that to time management, and I completely agree. It’s something I come across all the time in my own life. We’re all given the same amount of time each day. What we do with that time is completely up to us, more or less. I’m not going to blog today about how *you* ought to be using

Goal Setting for Fun and Profit

Because what’s more interesting? A simple New Year’s Resolution, or a way to convince yourself you’ve earned that extra month of World of Warcraft? That’s right, folks. I don’t just set yearly goals–I break those goals down into monthly or daily sized pieces, and then I attach monetary figures to those pieces. It works for me, whether from OCD tendencies or just pure unabashed greed. But if it gets me to floss daily, how is it a bad thing? Allow me to go over my goals for this year. Write at least one book, preferably two. This is in addition
