Kindle Paperwhite: My New eReader and Some More Thoughts on eBooks

Yes, I know. I’ve been a long time iPad owner. So why in the world was I so happy to get a Kindle Paperwhite for my birthday? Why was it even on my wishlist to begin with? If you’re a longtime reader, then you know: I do an awful job of actually reading books on my iPad. I have a terrible attention span, because every time I pick it up, there are so many other things I could do with my iPad–things that don’t include reading. There are sports scores to check, fantasy football trades to be made, games to […]

Sometimes the Answer’s Staring You in the Face

Yesterday I posted all about how distressed I was that I wasn’t reading more. I just didn’t have the time! Something else was going to have to go! I needed to make drastic life changes to make sure I started upping the number of books I read! I really felt upset about it, and so I blogged those frustrations out. It took all of about two minutes for one of my many wonderful friends to point out the solution: Audiobooks. (Thanks, Nissa! That’s why you’re the president, and I’m the president of vice. Or . . . something.) I’ve had

Distracted from Reading

I’m a reader. Always have been, always will be. I mean–come on. Librarian? Author? I don’t just read books. I devour them. Except . . . I haven’t been lately. My To Read pile seems to get only larger, and my Have Read pile stays the same. I don’t think I’ve finished a book in at least a month, and just writing that down feels painful to me. I haven’t read a book in a month? What the heck is wrong with me? So if I haven’t been reading books, what in the world *have* I been doing? Lots of other

Why Do You Read or Watch?

Sometimes I look at people’s reviews of books and am just shocked that we can have such differing views. Books I absolutely adore get trashed, books I think were terrible get praised. As I’ve thought about this phenomenon, it occurs to me that one of the reasons this happens is reading can be a very different experience, depending on the person. It all comes down to expectations. What I look for in a book might well be very different than what you look for, but on the surface, we’re both evaluating the same process. I know–this doesn’t seem like rocket

Reading Harry Potter

TRC is reading Harry Potter. I’d been curious to see what his response to the books would be. No hype. No huge wait and anticipation between each book. No news stories all about how important they are or how many copies they’ve sold. TRC didn’t even really know anything about Harry Potter before he picked the first book up. Maybe he’d heard some things in passing at school–but I asked him ahead of time, and it wasn’t like he was very enthusiastic about the character or anything. So how’s it going? He’s devouring those pages faster than anything he’s read
