Groundhog Day 2017

I am the only person I know in Maine who celebrates Groundhog Day. That is, the only person who throws a party every year on Groundhog Day. I have cultivated some Groundhog Day acolytes who show up to said party year after year and put up with my shenanigans. But as far as inspiring others to throw Groundhog Day parties of their own, I have been woefully inadequate. Still, every year the decorations come up right after New Year’s. We have quite the collection these days: two signs with Groundhog Day quotes on them, 2 stuffed groundhogs, 1 groundhog hand […]

The Problem with Halloween

Okay. Now that the holiday is safely past us, I can speak up on something that occurred to me a few days ago, right about the time I was ready to pull all my hair out as Denisa and I tried to keep Halloween on track. First, a disclaimer: I actually really  like Halloween. I like how it gets people out and about. I like how it connects communities in ways Thanksgiving or even Christmas doesn’t. Top Ten Family-Friendly Scary Movies

I made up a top ten list for the radio show/podcast we were going to record today, but the recording fell through, which is sad. And so I’m left with this top ten list that isn’t going to be topical by next week. What to do with it . . .? I always find lists on the radio more compelling than the ones that are written up, mainly because there’s more suspense and you have to wait to find out what the top picks are instead of just scrolling to the end, but something’s better than nothing, so here we

A Groundhog Report

Two blog posts for you all today, because today’s regularly scheduled Wire review isn’t up to the task of covering the awesome of Groundhog Day, and I wanted to take a brief moment to report back on yesterday’s festivities. Yes, I celebrate Groundhog Day (if you didn’t know). I love the holiday, mainly because it’s quirky and fun, and there are no expectations around it other than what I give to it. Denisa noted yesterday that we decorate the house the most for Christmas, second comes Halloween, and third is Groundhog Day. Boo yah! Over the years, people just send

Groundhog Day 2015: Snow City

It’s hard to believe that just a week ago, you could see plenty of lawn in front of my house. We live out in an open field, so our snow melts faster than many of our friends, but still–almost February, and we had so little snow? What is this–Miami Beach? Not hardly. We got the big blizzard last Monday night, followed by another 12″ or so Friday, and now there’s another 6-10″ falling at the moment. Oh. And I discovered there’s another 8-12″ forecast for Thursday. It’s like the gods of winter are trying to make up for missed opportunities.
