Take It from a Librarian: Sources Matter

I’m a big Facebook user. It’s where the bulk of the readers of my blog come from, and I love being able to stay connected with my friends across the country and the world. Of course, it comes with its problems. The biggest one (other than the tremendous time sink it can be) might be the fact that Facebook forces me to see what a lot of my friends and acquaintances really think. It’s much easier to think the best about people when you’re not faced with a torrent of memes and political posts. “But Bryce,” you say. “Don’t you […]

A Report on This Year’s ALA

I’m in the airport waiting to fly back to Maine after another successful ALA (despite the Travel Gods’ best efforts to keep me from getting down to Orlando). It hasn’t been a perfect trip, but it’s been a good one in spite of that. What have I been up to? Let me tell you. I’ve been doing the library thing. I had an all day meeting on Friday focused on how to be an effective leader at the state level. It was filled with other state chapter presidents, and we discussed things lie how to respond to sensitive legislation and

How the Radio Show Went

So I did my first foray into radio broadcasting yesterday morning, and it was an interesting experience, to say the least. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect ahead of time, so it’s hard to say if my experience met those ambivalent expectations, but I definitely had a good time. Leading up to going on the air, I was fairly nervous. Not knees shaking or anything, but some definite butterflies. I’d be speaking into a live microphone, and I’d have no idea who was listening. What if I sounded stupid? Not only that, but I’d be working with a variety

A Report Back on MLA

Another annual MLA conference is in the record books, and I wanted to take a moment to step back and take a look at how it went. This year was different than last year, primarily because MLA was flying solo this time around. (Last year’s conference was held jointly with the Maine Association of School Libraries.) While that meant a smaller turnout, it also streamlined the process of conference planning, letting us really get a handle on how it could be done most effectively. It was a ton of work, but I was very pleased with the outcome. Why? Let

How to Cultivate a Sensitive BS Meter

If there’s one thing that social media has taught me since I’ve been using it, it’s that many of my friends have a hard time telling the difference between reality and fiction. Not *you*, of course, You’re very good at it. It’s everyone else that’s really bad, right? Right. I’d like to think people are getting better at it, but that runs counter to my experience. The amount of information out there in the world is only growing, and judging by the new stories that appear in my feeds, our ability to sift through it is staying stagnant. Case in
